At Balding for Dollars, we believe in providing support not only to the children diagnosed with cancer or blood disorders but to their entire family. Through our Family Retreats, we create opportunities for patients, their siblings, and caregivers to step away from the stress of treatment and connect in a meaningful, supportive environment. By partnering with Power To Be, we ensure these retreats create lasting memories and provide essential relief for families. Whether it’s teens building friendships on outdoor adventures or caregivers finding support and rest, these retreats bring families together, offering joy and respite during challenging times.
Teen Adventures
Our Teen Adventures program offers 13 to 18-year-olds, diagnosed with cancer or a blood disorder, and their siblings, a multi-day outdoor retreat. Teens get the chance to experience thrilling activities like surfing, kayaking, whale watching, white water rafting, and zip-lining. These adventures, created in partnership with outdoor specialists Power To Be, are fully supported by medical staff to ensure the safety and care of all participants.
More than just a fun getaway, these adventures help combat the isolation teens often feel during treatment. By sharing these experiences outside the hospital setting, teens build a sense of community and connection with others who understand their journey. The bonds and smiles formed during these trips highlight the immense value of these experiences.
Caregiver Retreats
In 2019, we extended the program to include Dad’s Day for fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and male caregivers. On these days we have enjoyed activities like fishing or woodworking with the hope that they provide an opportunity for Dads to relax, bond, and take a break from the daily stresses of caregiving. While it can sometimes be more difficult for Dads to share their feelings, we’ve found that these days can create a quiet camaraderie and often foster healing and support amongst those that attend.
