Teen Adventures

As fun as our hospital staff and child life specialists make it on the ward, sometimes you just need a little something more to make life brighter during this time. We provide fun days out for our families to help put smiles back on those faces. For those families that are on the ward, we host craft days and bring other events to them so that they are also included!

For our teens, we have something a little different and a little more awesome!

Teen Adventures is an outdoor program lasting 1-4 days for teen’s ages 13-18 years old, who have been diagnosed with cancer or a blood disorder and their siblings. On these adventures teens may go surfing, kayaking, whale watching, white water rafting, zip-lining, rock climbing, horseback riding, and so much more! We have partnered with some incredible excursion specialists at Power-to-Be, to provide unique outdoor experiences for teens. We also have amazing medical staff and support staff accompanying our teens on these trips so we can safely assure everyone is being cared for no matter where they are on their journey.

These adventures are so much more than a simple camping trip. Isolation during and post-treatment is one of the most prominent feelings that teens and young adults say they experience during their cancer journey.  These events combat isolation by giving the teens the opportunity to connect with each other outside of the hospital environment and help build a community of support for themselves. The smiles we help create through these programs makes everything we do totally worth it.

Next Adventure: July 19th-21st, 2023 – Whistler – Ziplining tree-top tour, Peak to Peak gondola experience, & more!

A message from our Patient/Parent Advocate:

It has been my privilege to be involved with Balding for Dollars in the capacity of a parent, volunteer, past administrator, and now as the Patient/Parent Advocate for Oncology/Hematology here at BC Children’s Hospital. I work side by side with the psychosocial team at BC Children’s and other regional hospitals to help support families with fun and informative programs such as Teen Adventures, Parent’s Retreats, and other Family Programming to improve the quality of life for our patients and their families. I am grateful to our volunteers and our very generous donors who have supported Balding for Dollars in the past and in the future years to come. – Suzanne Dunbar
